SEVENTEEN YEARS OF MARRIAGE
March 20Th was 17 years
Since I married him
I almost forgot
But it is the first day of Spring
Only lived with him for 7 of them
Had to support him
And 3 kids
It was not right
To make me be both husband and wife
I took it as long as I could
Now still worry about giving up
Like it's another failure
He keeps saying he's
Going to die soon
Well, 4 years have passed
He's still alive
I paid for the wedding
I guess I'll have to pay
For the divorce too
Even though he had money once
Kept by his sister
So this wife and ex-wives
Couldn't get their
Greedy hands on it I suppose
Well, money's not that important to me
Once, he could have come up with the $333.00
To file for a divorce
I keep awaiting him to leave the Earth
Some people in life
Are the babies I guess
Some are the mommas
Mother's are used to taking care
Of others as though I have
Look at my job
A nurse for twenty years
One of the biggest caretakers of all
Do I wait out another decade
Until 27 years goes by
And I am still married
To the man who's too ill to work
Sick in the head maybe
Well, it is a good excuse
If you've drank yourself
To death practically at 45
Why he can't start again
Get that liver to fail
I'll never know, except that
He stays where others control him
It's the last place he has to go
Before his judgment day
He doesn't really stand in my way
No one's beating down the door
To marry me
And if they were
Still being married to him
Is a good excuse to
Think about it a long time
Before two can become one
In these middle ages
Of a married poet
Who's really single in a house
With two affectionate boxer dogs
With two singing budgie birds
With one believable loving God
Be thankful for that, my dear old girl...
