PLAYING DEAD

There's a possum
By Alder Cottage
With a bunch of babies
Here she came with it in her mouth

As I ran screaming at the top
Of my lungs
Thinking it was Taffy
The old girl cat

Rat like it laid there
Pretending to be dead
While the babies
Scattered around the

Garbage cans
Crying and lost
Wanting mama
We'll shine a flashlight

It doesn't move
Touch it with a broom
It just keeps pretending
It's gone to possum heaven

Kids left to starve
Perhaps better off
The cats could eat them
And leave a gift of the tail for someone

But no
Just playing dead
Until we've gone
Like possums do

Like a lot of us do
Lay down and die
When the beast of man
Has his mouth around you

Until time passes
All is quiet
Gather our children together
To go on past the turmoil

And survive...
