Poetry For Everyday People
Simmering Guts
Good in a dead
clever way,
I can't read poets
that work so hard to
find new words, less used
words, disguised words,
I find words fresh if used
right from the word tree, if
they sit around on the ground
for too long pondering
then get boxed up, moved around,
then re-boxed, you know,
too much time spent
writing in circles for the
sake of? a sorta of maze
that has little to do with
our days or our nights or
our lives,
and I hope that they are
writing the way they want,
the way they need, not writing
to impress a certain crowd or
certain editors, or just to hide
the fact they have nothing to say,
I bow out gracefully from reading
such poets and this is the first
I have written of it.
I like the simplicity of everyday
language that we breath, the language
that put us here, the language used on
the phone, between friends, co workers,
lovers, happy hour goers,
the way we talk to our dogs, our mothers,
the way we talk ordering pizza, Chinese,
subs, the way we call the cable company
to ask them way the bill went up again this
month,
I love reading Poe, Yeats, Dickinson,
Lawrence but I love reading Bukowski,
Baraka, Giovanni, olds, Walker, much more,
the language relates to me,
I say this with respect I look down on
no one honest to their own craft, just
simply stating a personal fact.
Now if you'll excuse me
a cold Guinness calls.
