Poetry For Everyday People

Mostly Unheard In Love

She hears little
of what I say
and responds
accordingly,

says: "yeah yeah yeah"
not knowing the question,

and I wonder what it is
she's blocking out?
my voice, my ideas,
or something long before
me?

love of course would have
me believe anything, anything,
beware love will have you believe anything,

she says: "yeah yeah yeah"
and I know she doesn't wanna hear my
opinions on politics, philosophy,
the state of life, humanity,

she wants me to tell her it'll be
alright and that's it, it'll be
fine,

tough one for a poet.

hot air balloons rise and
I only see the romance from
the ground,

she says:  "yeah yeah yeah"
as I tell her about my childhood,
about times I never speak of,
Egypt in 1974, the night I met
Buddy Guy, the night I traded
my heart with the moon,

she says:  "yeah yeah yeah"

and I wonder
what feeds
substance
in love.
