Poetry For Everyday People

The Blood You Don't See Coming

He was a teacher
a friend, a coach,
young, tough, energetic,
healthy, good looks, perfect
wife, motivator, funny, smart,

killed himself early
in the morning, before
he took his usual run,
the morning after his
"giving up is for losers
and I don't see any here"
speech,

we'd all heard a recent
rumor that he'd slept with
a girl on campus, and of course
we stood up for him, he killed
himself by stabbing his own heart
three times in a row,

and if you knew him
you would know that he
did it so hard, so fast,
with such dedication

that he probably died
at first stab, but he
had that kind of commitment.
