Poetry For Everyday People
And I Did
They were drunk,
sitting on the floor,
hard wood, high old ceilings,
Bessie Smith filing the
house with good blues,
I was drunk too, sitting
on the other side of the room
writing,
and I heard her say to him:
kiss my feet, he did gently, then
she said: I wanna spit
in your mouth, he opened his mouth
she spit, he smiled content, then
she said: let's call Betty and
get matching tattoos, he got up
got the phone called Betty laughing,
they walked outside and sat on
the porch swing, kissing, hugging,
they would have done anything for
each other, that was love, that is
love, I knew that
and at the time
I was still waiting for mine, but
I knew I would find her.
sitting on the floor,
hard wood, high old ceilings,
Bessie Smith filing the
house with good blues,
I was drunk too, sitting
on the other side of the room
writing,
and I heard her say to him:
kiss my feet, he did gently, then
she said: I wanna spit
in your mouth, he opened his mouth
she spit, he smiled content, then
she said: let's call Betty and
get matching tattoos, he got up
got the phone called Betty laughing,
they walked outside and sat on
the porch swing, kissing, hugging,
they would have done anything for
each other, that was love, that is
love, I knew that
and at the time
I was still waiting for mine, but
I knew I would find her.
