On a warm Spring day as I walked along a country road
I saw a "dust devil" dancing across a field newly sowed
Watching in wonder as it veered and seemed to follow me
Soon I was enveloped in a cloud so dense I could not see
After it passed I dusted the dirt from my disheveled hair
Watching it travel on down the road to who knows where
Slowing its momentum as down the road I cautiously trod
As if to say, "you are only a mere man and I…..I am God"
This happened to me one beautiful spring day as I walked along a gravel road near where I lived. The Iowa fields were newly planted and as nothing was up yet, you could see for miles. Way off in the distance a "dust devil' (for those who may not know, a dust devil is like a little miniature tornado that we see in the Midwest in the Spring) came twisting across a newly planted field. As I stood watching this quirk of nature it suddenly changed course and began coming down the road behind me. Suddenly it seemed like it was living thing and I became very frightened in spite of its small but growing size. As the dust devil came near I turned my back to it and covered my head with my hands. It blasted my back with gravel and dirt and in instant was around me and down the road in front of me. It paused for a second in its forward momentum as if wondering; I wonder what he thought about that. What I thought about it was simply, we are all as mice in the presence of our God!
