Heart Of The Matter

On The Shelf

Too many tattered pages,
Within the cover of a book,
The corners well thumbed and dog-eared,
Pertinent phrases underlined in red ink,
To be held up and used in evidence against me,
I have no defence,
The truth written as I saw it,
I have no need to deny it,
Nor would I wish to,
You read the events as they unfolded,
My story told in truth and read as fiction,
These are the facts,
Offered for your perusal,
And you may discard them,
If it be your will,

I have no need of them now,
For they only served to mould me,

Who I am today, was fashioned from those events,
The people, the places, those who loved,
And those who chose to betray me,
I will be honest with you,
And if you choose not to read me that way,
You may label me fiction,
And place me in the appropriate section,
On the shelf!
