Life Dreams / Lucid Living (c) 2003

Haiku from ukiaH

(The following introduces what the following poems are:  In the process of judging some poetry and brainstorming on creating a newspaper column with my colleagues from the Rio Grande Valencia Poets
Group (Valencia County Chapter of the New Mexico State Poetry Society), we decided that our fourth column would feature Haiku.
We'll be inviting local residents to submit Haikus at the end of our third column.  So the three of us (Chair, Vice-Chair and me, Secretary/Treasurer) all went home and started writing Haikus.

Except that I had the syllable pattern backwards - Haiku is 3 lines, 1st and 3rd line consisting of 5 syllables, and the 2nd consisting of 7.  Well, I wrote a bunch of what I am calling "ukiah" ("haiku" backwards),
and would like to share both the Ukiahs and the Haikus that resulted when I turned them around to the traditional Haiku format.  Hope y'all enjoy!)

THE UKIAHS (lines 1 and 3 have 7 syllables, line 2 has 5)

Fierce struggle confined by shell
Membrane ripped open
Freedom found through jagged edge

I feel colors, all around
Music strokes my skin
Recalls love-in hippie daze

Silver tones of warbling birds
Faery chimes in green
Spring springs forth in my front yard

Rain taps my shoulder lightly
"Pssst! Hey! Listen up!"
Thunder crawls across gray sky

Thank You so much for this gift!
Words live in my hands
I release - they fly to You

I think I'm writing Haiku
Nothing else to do
Let's see what words come on through

Wasps buzz, birds sing, thunder growls
Silent falls the air
Earth turns all ears to the clouds

Foxtails agree with wind
They nod greenly, wise
The ancient ones laugh dryly

On the steps, await my ride
Donkeys bray afield
Jack-asses! Gotta love 'em!

THE RESULTING HAIKUS (Lines 1 and 3, 5 syllables, line 2, 7)(not necessarily in the same order as the ukiaHs)

Nothin' else to do
Sittin' here writin' Haiku
Odd notions ensue

Faery chimes in green
Silver tones of warbling birds
Spring at my doorstep

Wasps buzz, thunder growls
Earth turns all ears to clouds
Silent falls the air

Membrane ripped open
Fierce struggle confined by shell
Freedom's jagged edge

Music strokes my skin
I feel colors all around
Recalls hippie daze

“Pssst!! Hey! Listen up!”
Rain taps my shoulder lightly
Thunder crawls the sky

Words live in my hands
I release, they fly to You
Source of living rhymes

Nodding greenly, wise,
The ancient ones laugh dryly
Foxtails agree with wind

Donkeys bray afield
Jackasses! Gotta love ‘em!
On the steps I wait
