Poetry For Everyday People

Heroes

My cross roads are cultural
and I've always told the devil
it's a deal breaker for me
to give in, sell out,

see I know of people
who have touched the sky, floated
like a butterfly, who's time
would come after a while,

I know a man who got killed
for a dream, that changed
a country, a society, a vocabulary,
that started an everlasting movement
of hope, pride and resilience,
history made him king yet apparently
he already was,

I know a woman that made me laugh
then decided to make me cry for love,
she changed things, took the hit and
came back stronger,
she would get the last laugh
and an American express card,

I know of men that told the world
they were going to be women,
women that told the world they were
going to be men, their strength augmented
my spirit, their strength freed my soul,

how do you have a brain and call
anyone making a stand alone anything
but a hero,

there's a cat with a band out of Freehold New Jersey
who stood up when they told him to sit
down, his music helped save my life,

it's alright to wanna blend
between the surface
but who are we
to stop fireworks,

to get in the way
of those about
to change the world
for the better,

or give a kid
a chance.
