If this be life then let it be
Mine to do with what I will.
Let me wander aimlessly
And of bad habits take my fill.
Let me stand apart from my peers
And soothe my mind with silent years.
If this be life then I shall keep
Faith with me always, my counsel trust
And I shall bathe in wondrous sleep
Until my dreams should turn to dust.
Take my hand though not from me steal
My freedom, spirit, my life's appeal.
If this be life then let fate take
What hand he will to light my way.
Though my journey alone I make
It is my choice for life's long day
So not another to me bind,
Nor home, nor hearth, nor child, nor wife
But let me succour comfort from my mind
And let me live now, this my life.
