 THE TRAVELING LIFELONG BUSH POET

How Life For Some It Comes To Be

There's a side of life even I've not known
Things I think of now and then~
That people do for unknown reasons why
Like some things I came across way back when~
Once in my travels so long ago
I sat in a bar alone~
Waiting for time to pass me by
To get a bus to take me to my then home~
A guy was sitting a few seats away
And at that time that left him and I~
I did not notice him there at first~
But then he looked like he was about to cry~
I asked him what was wrong my friend
He looked at me with eyes so sad~
He took a drink and then he replied
Life for me has never been this bad~
We talked about life and such
And then I asked him was he wed~
He looked up at me again
And replied .. My wife is dead~
Being on our own as we were
He seemed to want to talk its true~
So I then became the listener then
And he went on about his life right through~
But getting more then to the point
He told me of the night he last saw his wife~
Some woman friend his wife had met it seems
Asked to go out with her to this place of strife~
He stayed at home of course he said
They had then a small son at the time~
He thought they were having a girls night out
And thought all would be fine~
Apparently they went to a gang members hall
Where guys there did their thing~
There was several of then in this den come hall
This started to sound a familiar ring~
This chap he was from America
His story was of home~
I listened to him with his slang
As he sat there all alone~
He told me almost daylight came
And he received the strangest call~
Someone had rang him up he said
Told him to go then to this hall~
The police he told were already there
His love lay upon the halls then bottom floor~
She was dead below the stairs there and
He knew he would be with her never more~
No body as he told to me
Knew anything about this deed~
And all sorts of stories came to be
Around the area with speed~
I sat there listening to all of this
Did not know what to think no way~
I told him how badly I felt for him
He bowed his head and went on to say~
He said I went back much later after all of this
To that same address one night real late~
They were all within this hall all drunk
He said so I thought I'd clean the plate~
Clean the plate I asked him puzzled
He told me then just what his actions were~
Said he had lost his son the other day
Because of had happened to her~
He said I poured petrol all around
And set that hall alight~
I could not believe what he was saying
But he was so sincere and it sounded right~
He had been drinking there alone
And sitting low within his spot~
And my not knowing him at all
I wondered truth or rot~
Getting on my bus after this event
I went to where I was staying at~
And on the television set next day
On the news I heard the worst right where I sat~
I saw this same fellows face on the news
He had taken his own life~
I could not believe it was the same person that
Had told me just before about his wife~
A friend asked me what in heavens name is wrong
I told him of this fellow in the bar just yesterday~
I wished to God that I'd have believed him
I'd have rang someone to show him the way~
That was ever so long ago it seems in time
But sometimes something it reminds me~
And I think back way down the track
Of how life for some it comes to be~
