Late in the night
I awoke to the the wind's strong blow
Moon light was shining bright
through my window making patterns on my floor
Apple tree branches waved outside making a
creepy design on the walls and door
Memories of long ago flooded my mind
When I woke to find something by my bed
To afraid to scream or shout
I pulled the sheet over my head
Childishly thinking I would be alright

Something warm and wet was touching
my hand hanging off the bed
I peeked one eye from under the covers
There was Whimper, my little pup
What had been eerie and threatening was now
safe and reassuring
I patted his up turned head and turned over and went
back to sleep

Tomorrow the apple tree would still be there
with the promise of the fruit it would bring in a few months
the sun would be shining - the birds would be singing
I would be rested after a good night's sleep
I smiled as I remembered that story from long ago
Everything that goes bump in the night
isn't always spooky and scary
Some bring sweet memories of peaceful times in our lives
