A Soldiers Story
Enlist and see the world for free
Your time would bring some agony
To friends and foe and even you
Of war and death some thought they knew
The battleground where courage spills
Crimson blood on foreign hills
Would run like water leaving their mark
Where helmets rest on rifles parked
Sniper fire would claim their share
Of those at point without a care
Where He you came to know today
Lies dead, face down by bullet slayed
You'd crawl with snakes, mosquitoes bite
Reminding one they too you fight
Survive some would darkness now light
Another day of firefights
Rain would fall in each direction
Your uniform would fail inspection
Survive this storm you pray tomorrow
Would bring relief of this days sorrow
Rations for food replacing steak
You had back home, where one mistake
Could cost you more than appetite
Sleepless your turn, your watch tonight
Your M-16, your closest friend
Leaning on it, hours you'd spend
Together you and it would guard
Your new family today fought hard
War would burn it's mark on you
Some would say thanks, more less than few
Failing to speak whats still not heard
Welcome home son, yet to occur
Dedicated to every soldier that served
in Vietnam and to my poetic friend
