He walked down the streets
tattered and torn
holes in his shoes
coat old and worn
Oblivious to others stares
his self esteem long gone
survival now his main concern
just some food and to stay warm
some would throw him money
others didn't notice him at all
he wore his medals proudly
from the years when he gave his all
fighting for King and Country
was a wonder he survived
many friends did perish
as in battle they had died
how tragic was he now like this
and with nobody to care about him
for all that he had given
he wasn't thanked by them
how many brave old soldiers
in battle bold and brave
landed up as sad as him
to land up in a paupers grave?
