Heart Of The Matter

She Stepped

She stepped into the spotlight,
An instant star was born,
An icon of the eighties,
Unforgotten, though now gone,

She stepped into a fairy tale,
Her future looked so bright,
A woman with a mission,
She shone with love and light,

She stepped onto a pedestal,
Revered in all her glory,
Behind closed doors …
When truth was told,
Lay another sordid story,

She stepped into a marriage,
Unrequited was her love,
They used her and abused her,
When push, it came to shove,

She stepped into her womanhood,
For love was her desire,
And really, who could blame her?
Her crown prince was a liar,

She stepped into the tempest,
She let her halo slip,
She blew away the monarchy,
By shooting from the hip,

She stepped upon the hypocrites,
Who stand for church and God,
And some, they cried ‘adulteress!'
Yet the masses did applaud,

She stepped into the Paris night,
Her lover by her side,
And paparazzi hounded,
They sought a place to hide,

She stepped into a tunnel,
Blinded by the light,
And she stepped into forever,
The star that shone so bright.
