It's a Gimme World  04/20/2007

After reading the news, I penned this verse.
It made me so angry I wanted to curse!
Story after story just made my blood boil,
Since slackers out there never work or toil!
It's all sob stories that permeate the news.
Charity and handouts are all too profuse!
I'm happy to give when there's a real need,
Especially when there are children to feed.

It's the gimme world, and I've had my fill.
Let me clarify this so I don't sound shrill.

Now there are many who actually try,
But circumstances sadly send them awry.
To them I cheerfully give and support.
It's not their adversity I purport,
After Katrina the outcry was great.
Incessant were the pleas for money to donate.
Money, housing and all essentials for living
Were handed over. We were all very giving.

It's a gimme world and I've had my fill.
Let me clarify this so I don't sound shrill.

A church took in a single mom with kids
To rescue her family from the skids.
She was given shelter, clothes, food and a car.
For a full year she lived like a Hollywood star.
When told it was time for her to move on
Her gratitude faded, and then it was gone.
Did she ever try to stand up on her own?
No! All she did was whine and moan.

Yes, it's a gimme world and I've had my fill.
Let me clarify this so I don't sound shrill.

A single mom was given help to buy a home.
It was no mansion, but still it was her own!
"It needs repair!" she sniveled and cried,
Seems to me some folks can't be satisfied!
Like a spoiled little brat she cries for more,
Never considering the poorer than poor.
Instant gratification is all she can see.
It's all about what you can do for me.

So, it's a gimme world and I've had my fill.
Let me clarify this so I don't sound shrill.

A church bought a fine home to give,
So another family had a place to live.
Not one step did they take inside the door,
They flipped it for profit ‘cuz they wanted more!
Like bloodsucking leeches, they drain us all dry.
Never on their own work do they rely.
It took me twenty years to earn a home.
I was a single mom, too, but stood on my own.

But it's a gimme world and I've had my fill.
Let me clarify this so I don't sound shrill

A mindset of poverty keeps them deprived
Like a parasite they've lived and thrived.
Their ‘poor me' mentality has them bound.
It's an ceaseless cycle and quite profound.
There's nothing wrong with accepting aid
But, there comes a time it should be repaid.
Entitlements they see as their destiny
Not thinking of personal responsibility!

Oh, it's a gimme world and I've had my fill.
Let me clarify this so I don't sound shrill.

I've seen folks in perfect health
Flourish well on their disability wealth
You can watch ‘em fly to Walmart at month's end
Benefits from your paycheck they race to spend
Then there are those who live and prosper
Through frivolous lawsuits with a lawyer
They are parasites, no matter the variety
Legal stealing is their only propensity!

You see, it's a gimme world and I've had my fill
Let me clarify this so I don't sound shrill

Now, the Bible commands us to work;
Not employment, but idleness to shirk;
With instructions to not be greedy
To give willingly to the truly needy.
Surely, you say, if we love one another
We would care for a sister or brother
Like the Bible says. And I agree with that
Except when they just sit around and get fat!

Still, it's a gimme world and I've had my fill.
Let me clarify this so I don't sound shrill.

My gimme tirade, you may denounce,
But it is this welfare state that I renounce!
As a welfare child, we had no frills;
We were given only enough to pay the bills;
Supplied with bare basics, but no TV or car.
Today, you'll see ‘em they buy steak and caviar!
With a welfare check from cradle to grave.
For their keep do they ever work or slave?

No! It's a gimme world and I've had my fill.
Let me clarify this so I don't sound shrill.

I've worked hard all my life
And understand stress and strife.
My taxes already pay their way.
It's my paycheck on which they prey.
But shall I cast pearls before swine?
I think not. That I will decline!
I refuse and I turn a deaf ear…
When gimme, gimme, is all I hear!

Instead, gimME a world where gratitude is shown,
Where responsibility is taught and then it is sown,
Where a fish is served to curb their hunger
Where learning to fish is no fault or blunder,
Where charity is given by those who've received,
Where work is a thing of pride to be achieved,
Where the ‘poor me' syndrome is no longer found,
Where freeloaders never roam around!

Where from labor they no longer abstain.
Where funds are not used to buy cocaine.
Where disabilities are real and genuine.
Where benefits are not used to undermine.
Where lawyers work has real substance,
Where justice is not a means of finance.
Where the Golden Rule we all willingly obey
Where giving thanks and for each other we pray!

Gimme that kinda world and we'll all have our fill.
Gimme that kinda world and I'll no longer be shrill!!
