A sudden crash on the waterfront
Like a clap of thunder sent from the heaven's on high
I ran to see what had fallen outside
Was it something from out of the sky?
There to greet me on the grass below
Was a huge white figure, stretching and preening just so
The wing span was quite outstanding as
The creature had them spread wide on show
Waiting for the ever present partner to arrive,
For it's well-known they take only one for all their days,
I stood back gazing about me far and beyond
Though the expected significant other didn't come this way
By now the feathered grooming was over and
The magnificence of this bird with pure downy white
But I'm sure he knew all along his lady had gone
The poor thing stood there a desolate sight
