UNDER THE ELMS

 UNDER THE ELMS

UNDER THE ELMS

That day under the tall elms
You pledged your love and I pledged mine
Forever seemed a long time away

Nothing is sure in the game of life
Soon you would be going away far across the sea
To a strange land with a strange tongue

Your fingers laced mine - my hand felt so small in yours
Doves feeding at our feet cooed happily
They didn't care our hearts were breaking

The wind was sweet with the scent of honeysuckle
We talked of silly things
dreading to say goodbye

You made me a promise
Your love would only be for me
No one else would do

You held me close
I could feel the ache in your heart too
I whispered in you ear

Remember I love you
Here I will be waiting for you
Under this elm where we pledged our love

The day was ending
The golden sun fading in the west
The night was quiet - the only sound your soft breathing

Our love will live forever and ever
How could we say good bye
Tears will not hold back tomorrow
