To Her
Rose petals floating on the breeze,
“To her”
They murmur solemnly,
Under rain and clouds of grey,
How life can change,
In a day.
She would have loved the people there,
Honoured by the fact they cared,
I look up a moment and think I see,
Her smiling figure
Under a tree.
She is dancing in fallen leaves,
Give me a moment to let me grieve,
Tears are running down their faces,
I'll keep her memory
In the safest of places.
Her body is lowered into the ground,
Whispering wind the only sound,
I want to scream and I need to cry,
But I can't ask questions
Or wonder why.
Hours later in the silence of home,
I sit on the stairs and ignore the phone,
Cradling only a cup of cold tea,
I'm lost in memories
Of her and me.
Twilight comes and the day is passed,
A streetlamp glows through the glass,
Slowly I climb the stairs to bed,
Lifting a hand
To my aching head.
When I'm lying down at last,
I think once more of the past,
In the moments before dreamless sleep,
“To her”
I whisper quietly.
