Tall and lean he waited on the side of the dark road
His raw nerves felt as though they would explode

It was midnight before he stumbled unsteadily from the bar
He walked up the road a bit, the town where he lived was far

I was stupid, he thought, I should never have gone there
Regret swept upon him while his mind flooded with fear

He was sorry he'd lingered behind for that last drink
His courage faded swiftly and his bravery began to sink

His cell phone was lost which caused the trouble he was in
The chance of catching a taxi out there was mighty slim

But, wait a minute!........what was that in the distance?

Two lights appeared to come at him from around the bend
He ran forward both arms waving as far as they could extend

Silently the car stopped and he slid into the rear door
The driver mumbled something above the engine's roar

To town!" He spoke in a loud shout to the form behind the wheel
His hands drifted to his wallet, he smiled at the shape he did feel

He'd heard of attacks from strangers on lonely roads before
These thoughts filled his mind as he huddled closer to the door

But surely that would not happen to him!.......

The light of a cigarette lighter flashed revealing the driver's face
With a shaky hand he felt for his pocket knife, just in case......

No words were spoken as his heart beat rapidly against his chest
Would the driver kill him?... He felt sleepy but he dared not rest

He saw the driver hold something short & black in his hand
"Stop!" He shouted, he did not have time to formulate a plan

But the car raced on faster speeding like the wind
His throat constricted, chocking him from within

He was caught up in the moment, so he could hardly breathe
He started to pray, pleading for the help he would need

At last the car slowed down before a picket fence
He threw himself out the car holding the pocket knife in defense

He fell sprawled on the road and crawled into bushes out of sight
The driver did not even look at him as he sped off into the night

"No more midnight jobs!" the driver grumbled, "That was a scary young man!"
He gently caressed the heavy spanner in his hand
