Poetry For Everyday People

In The Arms Of Us

Forgive not
the kiss
that reminded you
how alone
you are

or the kindness
that left you longing
for what you've never felt

forgive not
the betrayal
that left you closed
unable to trust
again

or the song
that takes you back
to a life you no longer know

forgive not
the one's
that took advantage
when your guard
was down

as you laid there taking it
vulnerable kissing where they told you
silently watching them dipping in and out
of your pain

forgive not
the promise
that was just words
and you were a fool
to believe,

full, of what brought us
here, now,

reaching for some place
safe, true, stable,
caressing ourselves
dreaming about a touch
that does not exist,
by candle light,
behind locked doors,
tomorrow we'll go to work
quiet, go about our business,
walking with our numbness
as if we're alright,

dreaming about
those candles
that wine
caressing ourselves
on our sofa
surrounded by our pillows
in the safety
of our own hands
behind our locked doors

away from
predators
disguised as humans

all these angels
and one devil
you'd think
the odds would be
in our favor?
