~*~`THE OLD LAMP LIGHTER`~*~

My Great GrandDaddy was a lamp lighter I've been told
He had a warm heart as rich as a pot of gold
Many a night it kept him from the bitter cold
As he made his rounds to keep darkness from taking hold.

On his route, many a kind folk he would greet
As he humbled along walking from street to street
No autos, bikes  nor traffic lights were ever in sight
Horse drawn buggies were the elite's only delight.

No matter whatever the weather held in store
The old lamp lighter made trips door to door
Trudging along with merriment and sometimes song
He brought happiness with light as he traveled along.

The old lamp lighter, lonely ,  weary and worn
Walked with memories of a family long forgone
Inspired by friendship of those he met on his way
As he struggled along in life to keep darkness at bay.

~The Old Lamp Lighter of long long ago~

An old folk song from my childhood.
You can almost picture the lonely old man,
walking about each night,
lighting the candles for the street lamps.
Scarf wrapped tightly around his neck,
 crooked and worn top hat,
back hunched from the years of hard work and sorrow.

***Please let this song take you back,
like it did me.
