Dad Never KnewMy dad how he loved Christmas time His working mates would all call in~ As there would a treat for all My mothers cooking so good twas almost sin~ And dad would make sure of course That there was goodies there galore~ And all would come at the chosen time Our table to explore~ Now one year dad had melons up the back And among them one special one~ It grew so large and the orders were Never pick that one my son~ By Christmas time it will be so large And then it will be mine~ To cut up on the table then Only at Christmas time~ I was a very knowing child I never missed a thing~ And I heard dad talking about his whiskey He'd said the drinking had ones ears ring~ It was a Irish whiskey by the name of dimple And I thought now do you think I ought'a As I heard my dad say once It goes down best with water~ Then I thought about that melon up the back Now it's a water melon this is true~ So when my dad was not about I knew what I should do~ Over the next few months a nip here and there I put the whiskey in~ Through a little cut in melon fine And off back to house I'd grin~ Dad wondered where that whiskey went As it was getting down~ He asked me of course but hey I'm a child Not Me ... I'd answer with a frown~ Come Christmas time and water melon fine Cut up on table there~ And when dads friends and dad tasted it They tasted something quiet sublime~ They all right then wanted to know How he grew one just so great~ And they all got stuck into it And end up singing till quiet late~ It sure had an effect on them But all positive and true~ Dad wondered about that melon so But hey ... He never ever knew~ Terrence Michael Sutton Copyright 2008 Poetry Ad-Free Upgrades Vote for this poem
