in the country

in the country
      fields of corn at dawn
      sparrows morning chorus
      awakes our day
the hare skips and jumps amongst the hay

the tractor ploughs the furrow fields
the farmer sits down to his morning breakfast meal
the church bell rings out across the dell
      all is well in dorset

the pastor prays his common prayer
      the congregation gathers
      their love to share
the village clock its chimes the hour
      the daffodils reveal their flower

      the barn is full
the cows are in the Meadows sweet
the chickens pecking at my feet
the cock does crow and the pigs they snort
the magistrate goes off to court

the village idiot wakes up for tea
calls out good evening to you and me
the boys and girls are dressed for school
and Mary Jane cant find her shoe

the sun is bright up in the sky
whilst all your dreams they hurry by
the poet rises from his bed
wonders of the thoughts within his head

the swans are gliding on the rivers flow
       now its time for work
      i have to go
