 the gypsy poet

village walk

oh to walk the village
where stocks and grass do stand
where common men and country lass
      are oft seen holding hands

there i see old Pelham's house
      within the grounds so fine
      where lords and ladies congregate
      aside the stour and vine

      oh to see old Gulliver
      hide his tea and more
      where contraband was hidden there
      far from the raging shores

where Augustus john drew pictures bold
      of naked Gypsy gals
where dolpnhind lapped upon the bay
      far from the sails today

oh to walk to millhams lane
      the mead where rabbits played
      to visit old st Andrews
      anytime of day

to hear the church bells ringing
      to stroll the northbourne track
across to canford heath my lads
      with rabbits strings on back
