Away out in a suburb not far out from Sydney
Near the biggest cemetery there~
Old men met every weekend of a night
In this old old pub beyond repair~
One night after talking about their young days
And how wonderful each one was back then~
They got to taking a bet about bravery
To see if they were still as was once back when~
The biggest old cemetery was not far away
And it was getting pretty late at night~
and they bet each other one at a time that
They couldn't walk into the middle tomb without fright~
One at a time he walked off in amongst the graves
Carrying his stake and hammer too~
As each one had to drive in a stake
With his colored ribbon it is true~
That way they'd know he actually went in
To the tomb of the oldest buried dead~
Five colors and five of them
The last one to go was old Fred~
They waited and waited but he didn't show
Oh he more n likely just took off home~
That's what the other four decided then
So they all went then towards their home alone~
Next day one of them discovered
That old Fred had not gone home at all~
It had been simply pouring with rain
And they thought that he might of had a fall~
So they went to looking all over the place
And then they went searching amongst the grave stones~
And they then found old Fred laying dead on the ground
In his longest rain coat as if full of bones~
In the darkness old Fred had driven that stake
Right through the dragging tail of his coat~
And there he had been struggling to get away
And the coat top was rapt tight round his throat~
A look on his face of pure horror
As if the whole world of the dead had gotten him there~
But Fred not knowing had driven in that stake
And this was all for a bet and a dare~
