 The Churchyard Horse

There stands the horse,
Of St. Egbert's,
Grazing amongst the stones,
Tethered by a length of rope,
Above the bones.

Of Emily, wife of William,
Died 1743,
And Samuel,
Only son of Margaret and John,
Who died in infancy.

The old grey mare,
Doesn't give a care,
About the churchyard,
Or the people buried there.

She just spends her day,
Grazing,
Amongst the weathered stones.
Where the dead of the village lay,
At rest,
In peace,
In God's green acre.
