Words and Verse

Insomnia

I lie awake upon my bed
Unwilling prisoner of Night
By hearing tortured, dulled by taste,
Bereft of speech and robbed of sight.
And mem'ries of the past surround me
Bathed in the dark of timeless light.

There walks a girl whom I once loved,
She tosses back her golden hair,
More beautiful than when we met.
An old friend here, dear Russia there!
All swirling round about my mind
Illumined by the darkness' glare!

But what when I at last can sleep?
Will memory then let me be?
Or will it haunt me into dream
And ever try to follow me?
Will I still be a prisoner?
A prisoner of Memory?
