The Guilt Is Mine

In my bed as I lay sleeping,
In my dreams my heart is weeping.
Thinking of what used to be,
And the the love you gave to me.
I have just myself to blame
I am living with the shame.
Oh my love, if I could only
Keep from being oh so lonely.

When they told me that night
I ran to you in such a fright
I did not know what I would see
And how awful it would be.
I saw you hanging from that rope
I knew that I could never cope
With the guilt so devastating,
All the time myself I'm hating.

I did not know that you had seen,
Me on that night alone with Gene
Kissing him beneath the moon
Beside the river we did swoon.
I can not live with all my shame
Tonight I'll go to do the same.
Upon that hill beneath the tree
Where you and I first came to be
I'll take my life and justify
The guilt is mine, I have to die.....
