Poetry For Everyday People

My Heart

I am freaked out
by the sound
of my heart beating,
the feel of it beating,
it's too pronounced at times,
my unassuming left hand laying
across my heart while my right
sips red wine, the drum inside
my chest, distinctly tribal,

I pull my hand away, quick, it's
as if a wire connected to my ears
and the sound echoes with a bass
beyond volume, internal rhythm,
gypsy soul, the beat of one poet,

the red wine's for me but maybe
for you too my heart, the love
is for me but maybe for you too
my heart, the potassium inside
my carrot juice is for me but
maybe for you too my heart,

I do wanna take care of you,
you are the beat I march too,
even though I am mostly distracted
by beats of all the different drums
and their crazy light shows,

even though I don't thank you.
