The Morning I made a Cow
I went to check the calving bunch one early Sunday morn
The sunrise brought sweet rays of light as the day was born
I drove down past the graineries and lyeing near the stream
An old cow looked like she had died, no movement could be seen
I jumped from my pickup ran to check for signs of life
she had a pulse and some short breaths I found when I checked twice
I knew that life for this old cow was most surely done
I quickly made her pain depart with a bullet from my gun
The next step that I took was quick as I cut through her hide
to save the tiny bovine that I hoped was still alive
I reached through the new incision to grab two tiny legs and head
pulled real hard and fast it felt like lifting a keg of lead
I lay the tiny newborn on the gentle grassy slope
cleaned her mouth and nose and for a breath had hope
She blinked her tiny Eyes and shook her slimy head
I can still remember the prayer of thanks I said
I wrapped her in a blanket and lifted her onto the truck
I smiled as I hauled her home and reveled in my luck
My wife brought out a bottle and a big towels to clean and dry
The dogs both helped by licking her the cats were standing by
In less than ten short minutes she was up and wobbling around
we hugged and loved and fed her as we felt our joy abound
This happy time I share with you, the things I tell you now
That early Sunday morning that God helped me make a cow.
Her name is Nancy and she is sweet and fancy
when I come to feed her she does a little dancy
