American Dream III

9/11 was the catalyst
Looking back to me, it seems,
That caused so many changes
To my American Dreams.
Impregnable Fortress America
Suddenly vulnerable to attack
Then the Politicians' anger
And urge to strike right back.

Vietnam lessons seemingly unlearned,
The attacks bringing some release,
But in the case of Sadam's Iraq
No planning for coming peace.
And suddenly the White hats
Look more than a little stained
And the will to continue at wars
Seem more than a little strained.

And fortress America
At last can understand
The horrors of war
In their own homeland;
And my American dream,
Though a little worn and battered
Still survives in the main intact
Though with some illusions shattered.
