An echo in the wind

Do I deserve the sound of laughter
echoing in the wind
after all the very darkened paths I've strolled?
I have led… been led
and then left forgotten
so many years… so very cold.
If I do deserve the laughter
echoing in the wind
with laughter raining sunshine on each day
then why do nightmares haunt me
terrify and taunt me
until the sunlight chases them away?
If I do not deserve the laughter
echoing in the wind
though I try so hard to be a righteous soul
then take me now forever
death would be much better
than to live without real laughter in my home.
