Poetry For Everyday People

Before The First Burn

We were laughing,
playing, flowers
were mysterious,
butterflies were
magic, a trip to
the zoo, kmart,
7 eleven, the pet
store around the
corner, the woods,
the tree
behind the hunted
house,

we couldn't sleep,
we stayed up all
night, excited,
about anything
and everything,

tingling in a way
we would find out
later, is hard to
come by, the pureness
of innocence
perfect as untouched
snow,

hiding behind
a dumpster or
in the basement
of a friends house,
in the dark,
sitting close to each other,
bodies barely touching, goose
bumps, breathing hard, laughing
uncontrollably,

sleep overs, secrets
exchanged, secrets made,
the air smelled clean
as our hearts,

and under the moon
beyond the line
we weren't suppose
to cross, we spoke
and felt all,

we would spend
a life time
trying to feel
again,

not a care
in the world
my beautiful friends,

not a care
in the world.
