Poetry For Everyday People
What You Need To Know
You gotta go
without
electricity,
my longest time
was eighteen days,
shaving holding
an oil lantern
with my left hand
razor in my right,
laundry
hanging, after a quick
wash in the sink,
your iron, is between
your mattress,
you buy batteries
for your radio (that's
who'll talk to you), flash
light so you can
get around at night,
candles become much more
than light,
five dollars
for food, so you
buy canned beans and
a jug of wine,
that you
sip as if it was
the greatest melody,
Château Latour baby,
you act natural
at work, you just
don't invite anyone
over, somebody makes
fun of the way
you missed a spot
shaving,
no one
real
to call,
you get to know
yourself,
thankful that
you have a roof,
candles, a job,
running water,
poetry books and
rock & roll lyrics
(in my case),
thankful
you have
a chance,
that's how
you make it
out,
and that's
how,
why,
you, respected,
when you do.
without
electricity,
my longest time
