What I am about to describe is one of the top
ten baseball games to see ever. A doubleheader
between the Chicago White Soxs and New York Yankees.
They went into the games tied for first last two
games of the season.
Hi Bill,
Went to Chicago today in uniform to see the White sox
and Yankees. We were standing room only but free. First
game Jim Rivera stole second for the Whitesox. With the
bases loaded he broke for home and Pierce bunted him home.
They ended up winning 3-1. Win the second game they go
to the series against Milwaukee. How cool is that I am
thirty miles each way at Great Lakes Naval base. It wasn't
to be. Lopat was pitching for the Whitesox. He had a perfect
game with one more out to get. Then he walked a batter.
There was an error and another walk. With the bases loaded
a Grandslam home run. Yogi followed that with another home
run. Followed by Mickey Mantle hitting a homerun. 4-0 became
6-4 Yankees. One out from a no hitter and a loss. The next
day the Yankees won a playoff game and went to the series.
I saw history.I have the letter to tell my Grandchildren
about it.
