 Dad
Fathers day, the day the sperm won
And there you lodged, inside my mum
For 16yrs years I had you two
Until the divorce saw you through

I was lucky to have a great childhood
And a dad who understood
He took me to see QPR
And long drives in his car

He taught me about all the stars
And took me to the swimming bars
He'd tell me stories every night
And in the morning fly the kite

I remember him buying me toys
Stars Wars figures and stuff for boys
He never once laid a hand on me
He was always talking jokingly

When mum and dad went separate ways
I saw him on weekends and most week days
It was sad to see my dad fall from grace
But he always had a smile on his face

Like my mum he knew how to survive
Kept faith that luck would soon arrive
From nothing he worked his way back up
Started from scratch after being bankrupt

Told me that we are blessed with a skill
And sometimes in life the soul gets ill
When this happens accept what's due
But the Bartram blood will see you through

In my early twenties, travel he taught
And he took me to Israel and New York
Showed me that adventure was a plane away
And he wished in America we could stay

My dads done things that were bad
But I have forgiven him as he's my dad
You can't judge a man for trying his best
To keep a family living at the same address

We talk on the phone now everyday
And I wouldn't have it any other way
We all miss mum, even dad
But we pull together when we're sad

The fact I love my dad is down to mum
She never said a bad word to anyone
She never put my dad down or cussed
She left that down to us

I love my dad for never leaving me
He could have faded into obscurity
But he owned up to his mistakes
And now we are the best of mates.
