Poetry For Everyday People

At Home

It feels good
to go to the store,
buy a few things,

sugar, milk, wine,
chicken, asparagus,
potatoes, dog treats,
pretzels, paper towels,
tea, oatmeal cookies,

come home and put
it all up, feels
good to have that
wine there waiting
for you to relax,
filling the sugar
container to the rim
is comforting somehow?

we're in for the day,
roast a chicken,
steam asparagus, boil
potatoes,

we'll drink red wine
have some pretzels,
light candles,
get a nice buzz,

live a little,

maybe sprinkle
cinnamon on the chicken,
make the house smell
like a holiday,

take tea and
a cookie to bed,

watch the Honeymooners.
