Poetry For Everyday People

Guts And Dreams

Man, sometimes
it feels as if
we were kicked
in the nuts
full force
by life,

bad news, no money,
two jobs but no money,
tired of being tired,
tired of going nowhere,
being nowhere,

as politicians talk
about us
as if we existed,
as if they were
taking our calls,

as our cable goes out,
followed by our light,
as we sit in candle light
hanging on to whatever will
save us now, too proud, too proud,
guts and dreams, guts and dreams,

we know inside us:
what they don't,

some say:
keep it up,
more say:
give it up,

I don't know how
to give up, how do you
give up yourself?

every letter
is an extra breath,
every word a kiss
to a lonely spot,
every poem a chance
to make it out,

far beyond their reach.
