Poetry For Everyday People

Life's A Fragile Chance

Last night
I saw you
in a dream,
you weren't gone
anymore, you were
back, laughing, smiling,
talking about
getting it together,
not letting cocaine
kill you, going to see
a doctor, going to rehab,

you wanted us to
take care of the kids
until you got better,
until you got healthy,
you were laughing, smiling,

I got up to hug you,
to see how you did it,
how you came back,

and as I reached
for you, you cried,
you faded, as if you
melted into air,

the room got dark,
I woke, my love
sleeping next to me,
our dog gypsy sleeping
on the bed with us,

I got up, got a drink
of water, went out
to our back yard,
sound of fountains
calling old souls,
crickets, frogs, life
under a summer's moon,
I lit a cigar,
blew out smoke,
thinking about you,
old friend,

feeling a sad pain
in my heart.
