Never have I been so poor as to rob from thee
Mom raised us with apple boxes as chairs
Kids seeing how poor we dressed treated us with stares
The table plywood on saw horses
On it she served us what she could simple courses
Never did we complain about liver on Friday
Cube steak was a treat in my day
One day I found a purse didn't look if money was in it
Mom knew I looked inside I couldn't spend it
Older but not as poor I found work
Put in a good days work those that didn't jerks
Cashed my check later in the day my first vacation
I walked out that day filled with elation
Man walked up to me and said you might need this
It was my wallet I looked inside could not resist
He said if your looking for your money I saw you cash your check
Without counting the money I wanted to give him a reward respect
He said if I tried to spend any of your money Mom would not let me
