Today in History: On this day Aug.16, 1977, Elvis Presley died at home in his upstairs dressing room/bathroom. He was 42 years old
Elvis has a heavenly mansion on this I am sure
For he was a humble man and gave to the poor
His love to sing gospel music he never did hide
Although his manager tried to push it aside
The world suffered a loss when you went away
But your music lives on in the hearts of many today
I wonder at times all that we have missed
Since your time was so shortened with us
I know you loved your Mama so very much
Now you're together to reach out and touch
Even more than her many family members are there
Your twin brother Jesse and your Dad from life's dispair
I know you are singing the songs you want to now
And all are surely gathered for your unique sound
At least we have your music we can listen to
But all the hearts you touched still are missing you
You are still my favorite to hear your gospel songs
No other to replace your voice has ever come along
Oh there are many that try to immitate your sound
But none to me compare as they mimic around
I was such a fan I even named my son after you
You see I was in a clinic one sunny afternoon
To get birth control when the nurses revealed the news
I was so distraught I ran out crying over you
Then a year later I had a son and named him Elvis too
It actually was mentioned by his Dad this is what we should do
So I have my own Elvis but he doesn't care to sing
It's odd how I sometimes see his mouth do the same thing
You know when you smiled your lips were unique
He does say thank-you the way you would speak
I just wanted to remember you today Aug.16,2008
It's been 31 years since you went away
Keep singing the songs and someday I look forward to be
In the gathering to hear you sing gospel for me
Even though I have since visited graceland
Without your presence it wasn't the same
You always hated when people called you The King
You quickly would correct them
But now you're dancing and singing for Him
Using the gift you use to use for women and men
Thank-you Elvis for your unique sound
Someday I'll be seeing you around
Walking the streets of glory we'll share
This poem is a tribute to show how much I care
Quote from Elvis Presley
"I ain't no saint, but I've tried never to do anything that would hurt my family or offend God... I figure all any kid needs is hope and the feeling he or she belongs. If I could do or say anything that would give some kid that feeling, I would believe I had contributed something to the world." ~~ Elvis Presley
