Counted as Men

Counted as Men

Counted men among men, worthy of respect
Giving an honest days work for an honest pay check
Counted as one taking care of his own
Being sure to keep his business at home
Never the one to allow his family to be hurt
Not some jerk chasing every miniskirt
Standing for right, and for what you believe in
And never let it be said that you turned your back on a friend
Look back on my example, and what I tried to do
Look at all the times I sacrificed for you
You don't owe me anything except the honor due me
Which is judged mainly by who you grow up to be
Counted as men, means sometimes you will fall
But to be a man you must get up and stand tall
Some one once told me a man is not supposed to cry
I forget who it was, but they told me a lie
Even the mightiest hero, or the bravest of men
Will hit his breaking point every now and again
But with every tear that will drop a little lesson is learned
And a little more wisdom should the problem return
Sometimes you will be wrong, and you'll make mistakes
Be man enough to admit that because that's what it takes
To be counted as men is my hope for you
I shutter to think sometimes the things you'll go through
But live your life in such a way that when you look back
You will think, I want my son to be just like that
Treat every woman like a lady, with all due respect
But don't commit to something you are not ready for yet
Being a man is not measured by how many times you have sex
Nor how many babies you make, but what comes next
The changing of your attitude, and getting your priorities straight
You think you want to be grown? I think you better wait
When you become a man, you put away childish things
You pick up house notes, utility bills, and wedding rings
Not necessarily in that order, but you understand
The world in no longer a playground when you become a man
Not everyone you know is your friend, that is a title that is earned
A friend in need is a friend indeed when the table is turned
There is a lot more to it, you will learn as you grow
And there are some things you may never know
You can't hear it enough so I'll say it again
Stand tall, give your all, and be counted as men

To my sons
Jer'ray, James, Jer'rell, and Derrick
