Fable Or Fact?

I'd read of myths and legends,
But it was only fiction to me,
Then something happened late one night…
And it changed my mind you see!
Walking home through the park,
Not much on my mind,
I met a funny looking thing…
Who really seemed so kind!

Funny eyes in a funny face…
This person was so odd,
He bobbed his head from side to side,
As along with me he's plod.
I asked his name politely,
And oddly he did say:
Rumbustious O'Hara,
In a funny sort of way!

Chunnering away to himself,
I became unnerved,
And hurried up my walking,
For I was feeling a little scared.
I'd been told of mystical castles,
And of witches, bats and frogs,
And told of horror stories,
Of children turned into dogs!

So yes, my nerves were shattered,
And as I quickly hurried my pace,
All the time, he was there,
Glaring into my face!
For someone with little legs,
He sure could catch up quick,
In fact I must admit it,
I was feeling really sick!

Eyeing me up and down,
He asked of me the time,
I told him it was half past eleven,
And by now I wasn't feeling fine.
He had such brooding eyes,
As he ran and bounced along,
And all the time he was singing…
A funny little song!

‘Nearly there, nearly there,'
He sang repeatedly,
Well I just quickened my pace,
He was weird, I could see!
Suddenly he ran ahead of me,
And stood to face my way,
His beady eyes protruding,
Shouting; ‘yes, today's the day!'

All around a million eyes,
Staring and laughing at me,
Humming a tune which sounded like;
‘Look what we've got for tea!'
Panic soon set in…
A noise made me jump with a start,
I began to shake, I began to sweat,
I could hear the beating of my heart!

Then I found my strength,
And ran with all my might,
As goblins chased me through the park,
This dismal dreary night!
Then I saw a light,
And I ran as fast as I could,
Towards the house in the clearing,
And I banged on this door of wood!

Slowly it opened, and what a shock
For there, standing in the room,
Was Rumbustious O'Hara…!
I was about to meet my doom!
And now I wonder all alone…
In the shadows of the park,
And stalk my –prey – everyday,
From morn till after dark!

So if you see a little man,
With bandy legs and bulging eyes,
Run like hell, and don't you stop,
Don't listen to his lies!
Chant three times, ‘be gone, be gone, be gone!
You goblins of the night,'
And you will wake from the nightmare,
That's given you a fright!

These words will banish all,
As long as you stay calm,
Stand your ground, don't back down,
And you won't come to harm.
And when you her of stories,
Keep an open mind,
For you'll never know, they may be true,
Nightmares of a different kind!
