'Choices in Life'

Many people travel life's journey everyday,
Yet how many stop to really look, or take the chance to say
"Hello", to a stranger's face, play with a child,
Or even trade in place?

It seems there's always much to do
But little time for me, and you
To stroll beside a babbling brook,
Or take some time to stop, and look.

To smile, and feel each other's touch
Before it's lost, never enough
Time, to reap what's come, and gone
Before the rise of each new dawn.

It would be nice to just slow down,
Sit with your loved ones on the ground,
Laugh, and sing, maybe even cry,
Or listen to each other's sigh.

Why do we hurry, why do we rush,
Why do we tell our children to hush?
Why do we listen, or why should we care
Of what others think when they aren't even there?

Yet we listen--but turn a deaf ear
To the ones who love us and always are near,
Their hands extend to us in care
But pushed away with a single stare.

Life is too short to just throw it away,
And listen to those who use us as prey
To their needs, and their wants, but they also crave
The need to be loved, to slow down, and be saved.

Before it's too late to again turn around
To want, and to need the one you've turned down,
It's time to let your heart use it's voice,
Take a look at your life, you're the one with a choice.

~ This 2002 poem takes a sobering look at what many families
live with everyday. Heartache, abuse, frustration--
the need to be heard by ears that choose not to listen.
Unfortunately, the outcome often ends in needless adversity,
broken homes, and tragedy, yet when a person is faced with
this ordeal and can change it, how many choose to just look away? ~
