'The Merry-Go-Round'

It was a sultry summer day,
As three children out to play,
With gramma standing ever watch,
To keep them safe from harm.

The sun shone bright, its rays to smile
With glee upon the sand so hot,
As other children's laughter rang
Along with theirs, so sweet, and gay.

Soon the sun reached overhead
To signal lunch upon the grass,
A picnic made for only four,
With lemonade, and chocolate Smores.

They laughed aloud, as gramma read
A story from within her head,
Now written, in the book she held,
The words were hers, to smile and tell.

As she read the end aloud
A bell was heard, ringing loud
To call all those within its sound
To come, and ride the merry-go-round.

Music played from years gone past
As children rode upon the backs
Of horses, goats, lions too,
And gramma chose a horse in blue.

They laughed with joy as round they went
With waving hands above their heads,
A special memory formed that day
That time, will never take away.

~ Have you ever ridden a merry-go-round? I'm sure you have.
Walks in the park, balloons in the air, the smell of cotton-candy,
peanuts, hot-dogs, all the wonderful treats that children love.
Part of being a child is riding upon a colourful wooden horse
in a circle filled with music. I still love to do that, and had
the chance to do so on a sun washed day with my grandchildren in the
summer of 2005. That beautiful outing inspired this poem. ~
