'Freedom Comes Hard'

Where do you go when you want to be free?
Do you run to the lake, or do you sail to the sea?
Could you break free of chains that forever hold tight
As they keep you from flying as high as you might?

As laughter abounds, and giggles are endless
You think of the magic so cool, and pretentious,
As it tickles your fancy with coloured balloons
That are tied up in shapes of clouds, and of loons.

They rush through your mind like a landscape on fire
As it ravishes all it damn well desires,
Nothing is left when it's all said and done,
And you're left with the scars as you sit in the sun.

Freedom comes hard, and it carries a price
That not many can pay, except with their life,
But is it enough to break free of the pain
As it tortures your heart, and calls out your name?

Is it worth what you'll gain if you carry it through?
Will your end come quickly, or at least leave a clue
As to where you should be--did you fall on your knees
When you gave all you could--was it more than you should?

If we all knew the answer to life's fancy games
We would all come out winners, we would all feel the same,
But it's not meant to be for we're not meant to know,
So we sit, and we wonder which way do we go?

~ This poem asks a difficult question
that can be even more difficult to answer.
Freedom, if it comes at all, often comes
at a very high price. But is that price
often worth it in the end? I've thought
about this many times yet I never came up
with a satisfying answer, but I did find
inspiration for this poem. ~
