'Vengeance from Within'

The night is dark, as rain beats down
Upon the cold, black trodden ground,
Its chatter pounds upon the roof
In voices clear, but still aloof.

The sky above has cast it down
Like vengeance from within let loose,
And gates tear open, letting forth
A hidden army's driving force.

Floods now quickly rise, with currents fast
To steal your breath as life speeds past,
But still you try to stay afloat
As water fills your lungs, and throat.

You try--you cry--you beg in vain
For help to come, and ease your pain,
But it all gives way to horrid fright
As you sink into the cold, dark night.

~ I've been fortunate in my life
so far to never experience the horror
of an unforgiving flood. Deadly waters
rising, rushing, raging--destroying
everything within their turbulent path. It
happens more often than we realize,
and far too many lives are lost in the
process. This poem was based on thoughts
concerning these tragic events. ~
