Poetry For Everyday People

An American Family 2008

A good man
in his closet
on his knees,

wondering how
he's gonna
keep his home,

gets dressed
for his second job,
his wife's working late,
the kids are at the neighbors
doing their homework
until she comes home,

three jobs between them,
he's had a cough for four
weeks, he sucks on cough
drops,

Sundays, they are both off,
they grill hot dogs n' burgers,
they throw horse shoes with the kids,
the house across the street's
been foreclosed on, and now after
seven years in their home: there is
no equity,

a friend gave them a bottle of
wine and they looked forward
to sitting together,
strong with love,
family,
pride,

they tuck the kids in,
they turn on the TV,

Sarah Palin is on,
telling Americans
that Barack Obama
has a pal who is
a domestic terrorist
(Obama served on an educational
 charity board several years ago
 with 60's radical Bill Ayres)
 then she winks at them,

they change the channel,
Obama is on, talking about
our economy, about how to save
peoples homes, about hope, about
the American dream,
they turn it up,
pour a glass of wine,
move closer to each other,

listen.
